Why Your Summer Holiday Won't Ruin Your Progress
Published: July 9, 2026
For many people, summer is a time to relax, spend time with family and enjoy a well-earned break. Holidays are booked, BBQs become a regular occurrence and the usual routine often goes out of the window. While that sounds great in theory, it also brings with it a question we hear every single year. "What if I lose all the progress I've worked so hard for?" It's a completely understandable concern. After weeks or months of exercising consistently, eating a little better and beginning to feel healthier, the thought of stepping away from that routine can feel uncomfortable.
Many of us worry that one week away from the gym or a few extra 'treats' will undo everything they've achieved. The good news is that fitness simply doesn't work like that. Think about it like this - if going to the gym three times this week isn't enough to completely transform your body by next Friday, then one week away isn't enough to completely undo months of hard work either. Progress is built through the habits we repeat over months and years, not by what happens over the course of a single week.
In reality, holidays are rarely what cause people to lose momentum. More often, it's what happens after the holiday that creates the problem. Someone enjoys a week away, has a few meals out, relaxes with a couple of drinks and misses a handful of workouts. They arrive home feeling guilty and decide they've "fallen off the wagon." Instead of getting straight back into their normal routine, they tell themselves they'll start again next Monday, after the summer holidays or even in September. Before they know it, one week has turned into six.
A holiday isn't a setback - it's simply part of life. The goal of becoming healthier isn't to avoid holidays, birthday celebrations or meals out. It's to build habits that are strong enough to cope with them. The people who maintain their results year after year aren't the people who never miss a session or never enjoy themselves. They're the people who return to their routine without guilt or drama. They understand that one indulgent meal doesn't make them unhealthy in the same way that one healthy meal doesn't instantly make them fit. Consistency has always been about what you do most of the time, not what you do all of the time.
Holidays can in fact be beneficial, they give you a chance to rest, recharge and spend time with the people who matter most. Many people come back feeling refreshed and ready to train again. Others discover that simply walking more, swimming with the children or exploring somewhere new keeps them far more active than they expected.
If you have a holiday coming up this summer, our advice is simple, enjoy it. Eat the ice cream, go out for dinner, make the memories, sleep a little longer if you can and switch off from the pressures of everyday life. Then, when you get home, unpack your suitcase, put your trainers back on and pick up exactly where you left off. There's no need for a detox, no need to punish yourself with extra workouts and no need to feel guilty for enjoying your break. Your body doesn't need punishing. It simply needs you to return to the habits that helped you make progress in the first place.
