Summer holiday hacks ☀️

Summer has finally arrived and on the floor this week we’re being asked about managing progress during the summer months. It’s no secret that when the sun shines the beer gardens and the BBQs call! Holidays, travel, kids being off school, naturally our indulgence increases a little. So here’s some practical tips to help you stay on track.

- Plan head. Before heading off on your holidays or day-trips plan your meals and activities. Research restaurants, supermarkets and local cuisine so you’re choosing where to go and what’s on offer. Pack healthy snacks like nuts, fruits, and protein bars for travel days and always have plenty of water available.

- Keep active. Incorporate physical activity into your holiday routine. Explore your destination by walking or cycling. Book some outdoor activities like hiking, swimming, paddleboarding, or beach volleyball. Get everyone involved!

- Practice portion control. Holidays often involve eating out, which can lead to larger portions. Practice portion control by sharing meals, choosing smaller sizes, or simply stopping when you’re full.

- Choose wisely at social gatherings. Buffets and social gatherings can often be a chance to overdo it on the calories so choose mindfully. Start with salad or vegetables, load up with lean proteins and opt for lower-calorie sauces. Skip the bun, reduce the cheese or simply don’t go back for seconds.

- Stay hydrated. Drinking plenty of water is essential, especially in the summer heat. Sometimes thirst is mistaken for hunger which leads to unnecessary snacking. Carry a reusable water bottle and drink water regularly throughout the day. Herbal teas and sparkling water can also keep you hydrated and some add variety.

- Be mindful of liquid calories. Summer holidays often involve cocktails, sodas, and other sugary drinks. Opt for lower-calorie mixers, unsweetened iced tea, or light beer.

- Incorporate local produce. Take advantage of seasonal and local produce. Fresh fruits and vegetables are abundant in summer and can make for delicious, low-calorie meals and snacks.

- Maintain a routine. While holidays are a time to relax, maintaining a basic routine can help you stay on track. Start your day with a healthy breakfast, set a time for physical activity, and stick to regular meal times as much as possible. This helps in managing hunger and avoiding mindless eating.
